Nanjing Foreign Language School

The Nanjing Foreign Language School ( Chinese  南京外国语学校 , Pinyin Nanjing Wàiguóyǔ Xuexiao , English Nanjing Foreign Language School , abbreviation 南外 , Nan Wai , official abbreviation: NFL ) is one of seven in 1963 immediately after the instruction of the then Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai established foreign language middle schools in China. It is located in Nanjing , Jiangsu Province , People's Republic of China .

The Nanjing Foreign Language School consists of lower and upper grades. Pupils who have completed primary school (1st grade to 6th grade) in Nanjing can be admitted directly to the lower level of this school by taking an exam specially regulated by the Nanjing Foreign Language School. Graduates from other primary schools must take a different exam. The exam is different from year to year due to the change in Nanjing's educational policy, but in principle the candidates' knowledge of English , mathematics and Chinese is tested in the form of exams and interviews .

In the lower grades (7th grade to 9th grade), students learn the same subject matter as in ordinary Chinese lower middle school ( Chinese , math , political science , biology , geography , physics , chemistry, and history ). What is special is that from the beginning of the 7th grade, students can choose as their first foreign language from the courses in English , German , French and Japanese , whereby the number of places in the last three is limited to 16 and 18 respectively. Most other Chinese middle schools, however, only offer English . The school attaches great importance to foreign language teaching, so there are diverse linguistic practice opportunities, a foreign language festival and contacts with students from other countries; as a result, the language level of the school leavers from this school is relatively high.

After the three-year lower level, the students have to pass a selection test (uniform entrance examination for the upper level of the Nanjing City Middle School as well as a special language ability test, which consists of an exam and an interview) in order to be admitted to the upper level of this school, which includes grades 10– 12 includes.

Internationality is a particular focus of the school; this promotes knowledge of other countries, which means that many school leavers later study outside of China.

In 2009, the Urspring International School was founded at Nanjing Foreign Language School, Xianlin Campus (NFLS, XC). It is the German-Chinese branch of the Urspring School , a Protestant boarding school in Germany. Since then, around 25 students have been specially prepared for the Abitur in Germany. The pupils then usually switch to the Urspring School in Germany at the beginning of the 10th grade in order to achieve their Abitur there. Ultimately, the goal is to establish a mixed German-Chinese high school together with the Urspring School.

The director is Mr. Dong Zhengjing.

There is a school partnership with the Hainberg-Gymnasium Göttingen .
