The Friends of Athletics Association V. (FdL, spelling FREUNDE der Leichtathletik ) with its more than 1000 members has supported the youth sector of German athletics since 1963 . The membership fees are mainly used in coordination with the German Athletics Association (DLV) for its youth work and the promotion of young talent. This includes measures to identify talent, strengthen the idea of ​​fair play, and the annual award of the best female and male athletes. There are currently long-term funding projects for the triple jump and the 400 m run.

At the end of March 2018 it was announced that the DLV and the "Friends of Athletics" are strengthening their cooperation.

The member magazine Leichtathletik INFORMationen appears four times a year . Members can obtain them free of charge. Closely connected to the club was the Association of Former Athletes (VEL), founded in 1946 , which contributed a few pages to the magazine.

The chairman of the Friends of Athletics has been Roland Frey from Bad Schönborn, former vice-president and sports manager of the Baden Athletics Association, since 2017. Well-known members of the Friends include football idol Uwe Seeler and the former DLV President Clemens Prokop , but also formerly successful athletes such as Heinz Fütterer , Hartwig Gauder , Bärbel Wöckel and Klaus Wolfermann as well as active top athletes such as Corinna Harrer , Fabienne Kohlmann , Gregor Traber or Tim Nowak .
