Location of the Friedersdorf Forest on a map from 1821–22

The Friedersdorfer Wald forest area is located in the south-west of the Görlitz district , in the area of the city of Neusalza-Spremberg , between the Kothe in the west, the Ebersbach – Löbau railway line in the east and the B 96 in the south-west. The towel-shaped parcels of the Waldhufendorf Friedersdorf, which are used for agriculture, lie between the village of Friedersdorf and the Friedersdorf Forest . The forest area rises from the southwest from the slope of the Spree from about 340 m to the northeast and reaches 450 m southwest of the Wilhelmshöhe guest house, which belongs to Neuschönberg , at Fuchslöcherberg just under 411 m.

Pleistocene deposits in particular are involved in the formation of the subsurface. On the plateau-like leveled areas around the Fuchslöcherberg, the loamy ground moraine dominates with water -logged locations. The name Sandweg, for example, refers to other Pleistocene deposits, an old road connection from Ebersbach to Schönbach, which partially limits the forest area to the northeast. A layer consisting predominantly of rubble follows under a flat crust. In the composition, indigenous granodiorites predominate , which are mostly deeply decomposed. Furthermore, Nordic granite and flint , basalt , greywacke , quartzite and sub-carbonic silica-slate-chert conglomerate, probably from the area north of Görlitz, can be found. This 1 to 1.5 m thick layer of rubble is followed by gravel and sand of various grains and colors. Sand and gravel are also found in the pit near the Black Pond at the edge of the forest near Niederfriedersdorf, which were deposited there as meltwater sediments during the Elster Cold Age. This pit supplied building materials from the end of the 19th century until around the 1990s. Today the pit is filled with settlement and construction rubble and properly covered. At its highest point - the Hurn-Kuppe (394 m) - there is a lookout point with a view to the south.

The Herrenweg, named after the Niederfriedersdorfer Rittergutsherrschaft, which leads from Wilhelmshöhe in a south-westerly direction to Friedersdorf to the manor, and the Eichenbergweg, which runs west on Kuhberg (396.1 m) from Sternberg (old name: Stößerberg) to the northeast, are in the Wooded area.

In the Friedersdorfer Wald spruce forest predominates instead of the oak-beech forest that is typical for the location. On the southern edge of the forest, there are small stands of mixed oak forest rich in lime trees. Occurrence of chickweed (Stellaria holostea) point to an earlier common oak-hornbeam forest.
