Formerly parallel route to the ZL line

The Ebersbach – Löbau line is a branch line in Saxony . It represents the extension of the Bakov nad Jizerou – Ebersbach railway in Saxony to the Dresden – Görlitz railway .

history

The line was opened at the same time as the Bohemian line from Bakov on November 1, 1873 and opened up to Ebersbach before the completion of the South Lusatian Railway (Zittau – Bischofswerda).

Originally built as a main line for traffic to Bohemia, the line was downgraded to a branch line in 1923 due to the low cross-border traffic .

Initially, the route between Niedercunnersdorf and Löbau was on the same subgrade parallel to the Zittau – Löbau railway line . In 1945, a track had to be dismantled as a reparation for the Soviet Union . Since then, the branch at Niedercunnersdorf has existed.

Deutsche Bahn stopped freight traffic on December 31, 1994. Regular passenger traffic ended on December 14, 2002. However, the route is kept operational and occasionally used for freight trains, special trains and for diversions. A SOEG freight train with supplies for Zittau station usually runs on this route on Wednesdays .

In 2007, the line was leased from the German Regional Railway (DRE). Since then, the DRE has marketed the route as the Lausitzer Bergland-Bahn .

In October 2008, a new loading point was set up in Ebersbach for the building material lamprophyr , which is mined in the Klunst . This is served by two weekly block trains.

In the summer of 2009, train control was introduced on this route. There is no longer a dispatcher needed in Niedercunnersdorf, the traffic is coordinated centrally by the DRE. The signal at the Niedercunnersdorf junction is passed with orders.

On the occasion of the Day of Saxony 2017 in Löbau there was regular passenger traffic between Löbau and Ebersbach and on to Rumburk from September 1st to 3rd, 2017. In addition to a historic train set from the East Saxon Railway Friends (OSEF), Trilex railcars also ran .

Route description

course

The route initially climbs slightly from Ebersbach in a northerly direction. After a few kilometers, the watershed between the Spree and Großschweidnitzer Wasser is crossed in an incision . At the Großschweidnitzer water, the route now leads back down to the valley. At the viaduct over the Höllengrund , the Zittau – Löbau line joins from the left .

Operating points

Ebersbach (Sachs)

Ebersbach station (2006)

The station is on the Bischofswerda – Zittau line . The railway line to Bakov nad Jizerou begins at the southern end of the station . With the establishment of the electronic signal box (EStw) in 2008/2009, the track plan was greatly simplified and in summer 2009 the signal boxes of the station were demolished.

Connection wish heirs

This disused connection was at kilometer 13.85. The siding to the former textile company was dismantled, but the connecting point is still there.

Connection of East German hard stone works

Until 1967 there was a connection for the Ebersbach quarry at kilometer 13.34. In 2008 a new loading facility was built at the same location, but there is no longer a separate siding. The main track is used for loading. Up to three trains run per week, the operating railway company is the ITL Eisenbahngesellschaft .

Dürrhennersdorf

Dürrhennersdorf station (2007)

The narrow-gauge railway to Taubenheim (Spree) began here until 1945 . After the crossing track was dismantled, this operating point was an unoccupied stop. No train has stopped since December 14, 2002.

Junction Niedercunnersdorf W15

The junction is also called the Höllengrund junction. It was not set up until 1945, after one of the two tracks to Löbau was dismantled. During the DR times, a new signal box was built on the opposite side of the viaduct. Nowadays, the branch from Niedercunnersdorf train station is remote-controlled.

Großschweidnitz

The operating point is only occasionally important for special trips. Until 1945 Großschweidnitz had two platforms, one each on the track to Zittau and Ebersbach. Today only the former Zittau platform remains. At times there was a branch track on the Zittau track for the state institute with a loading street and goods shed.

Löbau (Sachs)

Löbau Railway Station (2007)

Löbau station is on the Dresden – Görlitz railway line . In addition to the route to Ebersbach, the routes to Radibor , via Cunewalde to Bautzen and to Herrnhut-Zittau began here . The starting point for the branch lines was the terminus in the southern part of the station. After these lines were closed for passenger traffic, the station section became useless and ultimately demolished at the end of 2008.

Current situation

Today there are only sporadic freight trains on the route from or to Niedercunnersdorf station on the former route to Zittau. In addition, the coal for the Saxon-Upper Lusatian Railway Company is delivered via the route and occasional special trains from the OSEF.

Engineering structures

To cross the Spree in Ebersbach and the Großschweidnitzer water near Niedercunnersdorf, two larger viaducts had to be built during the construction of the railway. They correspond in their construction with quarry stone masonry made of granite stones to the other large railway bridges in Upper Lusatia. Any later double-track expansion of the line was taken into account when the bridges were built.
