Yaacov Hodorov

Yaacov Hodorov ( Hebrew יעקב חודורוב; * June 16, 1927 in Rishon leTzion ; † December 31, 2006 in Jerusalem ) was an Israeli soccer player . He was the first goalkeeper for the Israeli national football team after the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.

By 1964 he was in the goal of the national team 31 times. He was viewed as a folk hero by many Israelis . Due to its performance in the World Cup qualifier against Wales in 1957 was one of Hodorov of the top 5 of the best keeper . In this game, which Israel lost 2-0 in the end, he could not be substituted, even though he had broken his nose at the beginning. With a broken hand, he played against the Soviet Union when qualifying for the Olympic Games in front of 70,000 spectators in Tel Aviv . His team also lost this game 1: 2.

In 1957, Hodorov won the league cup with his club Hapoel Tel Aviv , and three years later the national cup.

In 2006 he received Israel's highest honor, the Israel Prize , for his achievements .
