The Israelitische Friedhof Agudas Achim is a Jewish cemetery in the Albisrieden district in the south-west of Zurich . The name Agudas Achim is Hebrew and means united brothers . The Agudas Achim synagogue is an Orthodox Jewish community in Zurich that is also the bearer of this cemetery.

history

In 1913 the cemetery was built on the site of a former glass factory . In 1965 and 1979 the area was enlarged to 6,500 square meters.

Area and buildings

The Agudas Achim cemetery is located on the western edge of Albisrieden on Goldackerweg . Together with the younger, adjoining liberal-Jewish cemetery Or Chadasch , it belongs to a number of cemeteries in this area of the city of Zurich, beginning in the south with the Leimbach cemetery and ending in the southwest with the Eichbühl cemetery in Altstetten . Behind the entrance to the Agudas Achim cemetery there is a forecourt where the mourners gather. In the western corner of the cemetery is the cemetery building that replaced the old abdication hall in 1965. The individual graves are uniformly designed, the tombstones consistently show Hebrew inscriptions. As in the Binz and Or Chadasch cemeteries , the graves are not decorated with plants but are covered with gravel. Each grave is surrounded by a wall.
