The Pankow I cemetery is a former cemetery in the Berlin district of Pankow . It opened in 1841 and closed in 1971. The 4608 m² cemetery with enclosure from 1908 is a listed building.

history

When, due to the population growth in the municipality of Pankow , the burial area of the churchyard was no longer sufficient, the first municipal cemetery in Pankow was built on today's Wilhelm-Kuhr Strasse. In 1865 the cemetery was given a chapel at the northern end of the main road. As early as 1871, the opening of another municipal cemetery ( Pankow II ) was necessary. For Hermann Killisch von Horn , who died in 1886, a mausoleum was built in the cemetery in 1904 by the architect Christian Friedrich Malingriaux and Killisch von Horn, who was presumably buried in his private park, which later became the Bürgerpark , was reburied here. In 1908, the Pankow I cemetery was fenced off to the south and east adjoining streets. The chapel was renovated in 1936, but demolished in 1953/54.

In 1971 the cemetery was closed and large parts of it were cleared. Representative graves and tombstones were preserved and supplemented by the same other Pankow cemeteries, creating a cemetery park.
