The high cross

The cemetery high cross is in the old cemetery in Hirtstrasse in Nörvenich , Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia .

In the late autumn of 1933, the high cross was erected on the old part of the Nörvenich cemetery on the south-western boundary of the property. A few months earlier, the chaplain Hubert Schlömer , who had just been ordained a priest in Aachen, had come here. He had recognized the emerging anti-church policy of the Nazi government and wanted to counter it with an unmistakable, warning signal. The young chaplain suggested the erection of the cross , which was oversized for the small cemetery and therefore visible from afar . In order to anticipate a possible expropriation of the church cemetery property, an area of approx. 20 m² was measured out of this property and transferred to the property of the Barrenstein Foundation. The change of ownership was secured by the entry in the land register .

The District Court Councilor a. D. Dr. Breuer in Nörvenich and the executor of Barrenstein's will , the later Senate President Baumann in Bonn , had carefully considered the legal situation.

The then well-known artist Franz Albermann (1877–1959), who lived in Frechen , designed the cross and the corpus of Christ and had them made at the Frechen ceramics factory "Kalscheuer Werke, Toni Ooms". The Barrenstein Foundation, which was set up in early 1933, bore all of the costs. This is indicated by the inscription on a tile attached to the side, which reads: "In memory of the family MJ Barrenstein 1933".

In the 1980s and 2000s, the cross was renovated and entered on the municipality's list of monuments. The cemetery cross was entered in the list of monuments of the municipality of Nörvenich under no. 80 on February 16, 2000 .
