Friedrich Hopfner Medal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Friedrich Hopfner Medal is Austria's highest award for outstanding scientific achievements in geodesy , especially in the field of European geometra- tion . Her focus is on scientists from the German-speaking area .

Foundation, endowment

The medal was donated in 1977 by around 20 members of the Austrian Commission for International Earth Surveying (ÖKIE), which is now called the Austrian Geodetic Commission (ÖGK). The foundation was made in recognition of the merits of Friedrich Hopfner , professor of higher geodesy at the Vienna University of Technology from 1934 to 1949, for earth measurements and applied geophysics .

The finances of the foundation are based on the private funds of the ÖGK members, most of whom were / are professorships in geodesy and surveying departments. The proposed award winners are not allowed to be members of the now ÖGK (or previously ÖKIE), so that the group of possible candidates - with a few exceptions - is concentrated on the neighboring countries.
