Friedrich Ludwig Jahn Monument (Mittenwalde)
The Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn monument is a municipal monument for the gymnastics father Friedrich Ludwig Jahn in Mittenwalde in the district of Dahme-Spreewald in the state of Brandenburg .
history
At the beginning of the 20th century, monuments to Friedrich Ludwig Jahn were erected in many cities in Germany. After a memorial was inaugurated in Dahme / Mark in 1903, a foundation in Mittenwalde campaigned to honor the gymnastics father in Mittenwalde. For the 50th anniversary of the men's gymnastics club founded in August 1863, a memorial was therefore also erected on the Salzmarkt in 1913. It was created by the Berlin sculptor Oskar Krüger . He used Bavarian shell limestone from Kirchheim near Würzburg . Krüger created a square base with a fence. The four octagonal pillars represent the four characteristics of gymnastics “ fresh, pious, happy, free ” and are adorned with a gold-plated gymnast's cross . The pillars carry the bust of the gymnastics father, who rests on a plate lined with oak garlands . The monument has a total weight of around 115 kilograms, of which the bust accounts for around seven kilograms. After the First World War , the names of the fallen members of the gymnastics club were attached to the base. It was renewed in 1998 by Mittenwald stonemason Heinz Fluthwedel .
Behind the monument there is a popularly known "peace oak", which was planted by the residents in 1816 after the victory over Napoleon . At this place, Mayor Schwarz handed the city over to the Red Army on April 26, 1945 .
