Friedrich Carlén , actually Friedrich Nacser , also Friedrich Näser , ( February 8, 1867 in Luckenwalde - May 24, 1907 in Sand near Baden-Baden ) was a German opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Carlén, the son of an organist, was trained as a singer at the Royal University of Music (Professor Rudolf Otto) with his father's consent . In 1891 he went to the United States of America, where he was employed as principal tenor at the German Evangelical Church in Brooklyn. His sympathetic voice and musical security were praised and he was often invited to take part in concerts. He sang repeatedly in the major concert events of the German Liederkranz Society in New York and in the Seidel Society's seasonal concerts in Brooklyn.

After five years of activity, he finally gave in to the insistence of his patron, Kapellmeister Anton Seidl , and dared to step onto the stage, also according to his own wishes. The famous singer Katharina Klafsky , with whom he a. a. at the Singing Festival in Pittsburgh with great success and which strongly encouraged him to pursue a career on stage.

Returned to Europe in 1896, he made his debut as “Faust” at the Dresden Court Theater on August 26th and was immediately engaged. Although he sang roles like “Max”, “Lyonel”, “Bellmonte”, “Tamino” etc. there, he still felt cramped in his artistic activity and in 1897 switched Dresden for Düsseldorf.

There, too, he only stayed a year to follow an advantageous call to the Bremen City Theater , where he was an excellent artist as a representative of the hero tenor field.

"Tristan", "Rienzi", "Tannhäuser", "Lohengrin" were among his most renowned roles. He was particularly valued as a concert singer. His tenor was of real, purest timbre, full of nobility, softness, moving warmth, flexibility, and carrying capacity. His heartfelt, expressive presentation and his intellectual game were also praised. In addition to his work as a stage singer, he continued to work as a concert singer and has also earned a reputation as such in Germany. a. his repeated successes in the Leipzig Gewandhaus have made a significant contribution.
