Friedrich Gauwerky (born February 17, 1951 in Hamburg ) is a German cellist, university professor and interpreter with a focus on new cello music.

biography

Gauwerky made his debut in Hamburg at the age of twelve, and at the age of 17 he received the Prize of the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra in 1968. Between 1965 and 1970 he was supervised by Wilfried Boettcher, then until 1971 by Arthur Troester at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater.

In 1971 Gauwerky joined Siegfried Palm's cello class at the Rhineland State University for Music in Cologne . In 1976 he became Palm's assistant, followed in 1977 by the artistic diploma examination and the concert exam. Two master classes with Enrico Mainardi - 1969 in Salzburg and 1972 in Cologne - rounded off his training.

From 1984 to 1989 Gauwerky taught the major artistic subjects violoncello and chamber music at the Cologne University of Music in Wuppertal. At the same time he taught at the Rheinische Musikschule (Conservatory of the City of Cologne). He was a lecturer at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music in 1986, 1988 and 1994. In addition to his teaching activities, Gauwerky has always performed as a soloist and chamber musician. From 1972 to 1976 he was a cellist in the piano trio of the Cologne University of Music, with which he was awarded at the 1976 Mendelssohn Competition of the German University of Music. In 1974 he became principal cellist in the Rheinisches Kammerorchester Cologne and in 1987 in the Frankfurt Ensemble Modern, before accepting an appointment at the University of Adelaide in Australia in 1989. There he taught from 1989 to 1997 as a lecturer for violoncello, chamber music and new music.

During his time at the University of Adelaide, Gauwerky headed the string department of the university from 1994 to 1996 ("Head of Strings"). His duties also temporarily included leading the Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra. As the first cellist of the Australian Elision Ensemble, he again campaigned for contemporary music from 1990 to 1997. Gauwerky's center of life has been back in Cologne since 1996. From there he goes on concert tours around the world as a soloist and chamber musician - u. a. in the piano trio with the violinist Saschko Gawriloff and the pianist Kristi Becker - and as a soloist with symphony orchestras.

Since 1989 Gauwerky has also been teaching in the form of guest lectureships as well as international master courses and master classes in Europe, the USA and the successor states of the former Soviet Union, including so far at the Royal Academy of Music in London, at the University of California in San Diego, in Cambridge / UK, Huddersfield / UK, Liege, Odessa, Hanover, Dresden, Siegen, Arnsberg, Mannheim, Würzburg, Salzburg, Linz, Sydney, Wellington, Christchurch, Stellenbosch and Edmonton. In addition to his concert activities, he has made radio and television productions in Europe, the USA, Asia and Australia as well as LP and CD productions for companies such as Deutsche Grammophon, Ricordi, Etcetera, Ed. MF Bauer or ABC Classics.
