Friedrich Hansmann

Otto Friedrich Gustav Hansmann (born May 30, 1769 in Berlin ; † May 4, 1836 there ) was a German conductor and choir director of the singing institute he founded in Berlin. Hansmann was therefore made an honorary citizen of Berlin.

Life

Hansmann was born in 1769 as the son of a Berlin cantor and attended grammar school. After graduating from high school, he decided to pursue a civil service career that led him to the Berlin Ministry of Finance. In his free time he devoted himself to music. Shortly after graduating from high school, he became a supervisor at the Italian Opera in Berlin and later its director.

From 1792 to 1792 he was a member of the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin .

From 1798 he was the organist of the Petrikirche .

In 1804 he founded a singing institute which he directed for over 30 years and which performed many oratorios and cantatas in the garrison church during this time . These events were an integral part of Berlin's musical life at the time. Hansmann donated his proceeds to social institutions in Berlin, which made him an honorary citizen on the 25th anniversary of the choir .

He belonged to the Berlin Masonic Lodge Zum Widder .
