As a student, Hirschl was inspired to write by the poetry of Georg Trakl . He wrote poetry and prose . He published a selection of both genres in 1987 in his first book Erdzeit . Since then he has concentrated on poetry. Seven volumes of poetry followed until 2017. Hirschl also publishes in anthologies, calendars, magazines and newspapers.

While Hirschl's early work looks directly at people and their sensitivities, he looks more and more through the mirror of nature. In brief, often surprising metaphors , he depicts landscapes and thus people from an unusual perspective.

Hirschl is a member of the "Passau Literature Circle" and the " Regensburger Writers' Group International ".
