Friedrich Jacobs (politician)

Friedrich Jacobs (born December 19, 1910 , † December 3, 2004 ) was a German politician of the FDP and from 1969 to 1979 mayor of Cologne .

Life and politics

After studying law and obtaining a doctorate, Friedrich Jacobs worked as a criminal defense lawyer in Cologne. His office was taken over by Dietmar Artzinger-Bolten, a CDU politician and later president of 1. FC Köln . Jacobs, whom Gerhart Baum described as a fatherly friend, was politically active in the FDP , of which he was Cologne district chairman in the 1950s. He was a member of the Cologne City Council from 1952 to 1961 and from 1969 to 1979. From 1955 to 1961 he was chairman of the Cologne FDP parliamentary group and from 1969 to 1979 mayor of the city. He ran for the FDP in the 1953 federal election in the Cologne-Land constituency and in the 1965 federal election in the Cologne II constituency .

In the 1960s - the FDP was not represented in the Cologne City Council from 1964 to 1969 - Jacobs was active as chairman of the Cologne HTC Blau-Weiss and was elected to the council's sports committee at the suggestion of the Zweckverband.

The FDP parliamentary group in the Cologne City Council has been awarding the Friedrich Jacobs Prize in his memory since 2010 to honor positive developments in the city from their point of view.
