Life

Friedrich Nickel's father was a carpenter and cooper . Friedrich Nickel grew up in Reichenberg in what would later become Czechoslovakia . Here he also graduated from the art academy and was also an active wrestler . During this time there was a loss of vision in one eye due to hereditary weakness of the visual muscles. He found his first job as a draftsman in the Gablonz textile factory in the Sudetenland . After the occupation of the Sudetenland by the German Wehrmacht , he was drafted and experienced the Second World War as a draftsman and reporter in Russia . Here he suffered frostbite on his toes. He experienced the end of the war in southern France, from where he was shipped to Egypt as a prisoner of war . As a draftsman of portraits he earned a modest income there.

After his captivity was over, he settled in the Marktoberdorf area in the Allgäu in 1947 . There he was hired as chief draftsman and later as department head of the Paul R. Walter textile factory and worked there until his retirement. During this time he was the only one who was allowed to draw the Mecki figure ( HÖRZU and Diehl-Film) for textile print products.

Friedrich Nickel drew Lurchi volumes 61 to 63. At this point in time he was 66 years old and retired. His portrayal of Lurchi is strongly based on Heinz Schubel , and with these stories the reader was able to build on old reading experiences. The text of these episodes was also well and logically prepared. Georg Nickel describes his father as “an extremely perfect draftsman with lead, red chalk, silver pen and watercolor , particularly anatomically ingenious. A lovable knower and responsible for my emotional development. I was never able to hold a candle to him in drawing and I am still infinitely grateful for his impulses. ”Friedrich Nickel was to see his son succeed him as a Lurchize artist. He died on February 10, 1985.
