Friedrich Schulz (born February 28, 1795 in Braunschweig ; † June 1, 1864 there ) was a German lawyer, politician and Minister of State in the Duchy of Braunschweig .

Life

His father Hartwig Schulz was court preacher, consistorial councilor and prince educator at the Brunswick court. Friedrich attended the Katharineum grammar school in Braunschweig and in 1812 went to study law in Göttingen, where he joined the Corps Brunsviga in 1813, the year it was founded.

Career

After completing his studies, he began his legal career as an actuary at the Salder office . Further positions were chamber assessor from 1818 and chamber councilor from 1827. Shortly after the flight of the unpopular Braunschweig Duke Karl II. In 1830, he became a ministerial councilor and third voting member of the Brunswick State Ministry. He received the title of excellence in 1837. In 1843 he was appointed Minister of State. He was responsible for the departments of finance, commercial affairs, ecclesiastical and school matters.

Schulz supported the plans to build a railway in the duchy and secured state support for the project. Through his activity, the first state railway line in Germany between Braunschweig and Wolfenbüttel was made possible ( Herzoglich Braunschweigische Staatseisenbahn ). In the 1830s Schulz was the driving force behind the reform of the Collegium Carolinum , the predecessor institution of the Technical University of Braunschweig . On May 3, 1848, he resigned from his position as Minister of State at his own request, as there were conflicts with the Assembly of Estates over the state budget.

Schulz kept the upper state management of the Collegium Carolinum and the presidium of the consistory of the Braunschweigische Landeskirche , which he had held since 1838. In 1852 he was given the presidency of the ducal chamber. Schulz was the bearer of the Grand Cross of the Order of Henry the Lion .
