Friedrich Wilhelm Schnurr

Friedrich Wilhelm Schnurr (born January 21, 1929 in Göttingen ; † June 14, 2017 ) was a German pianist , university professor and university rector.

Live and act

Schnurr received his first piano lessons at the age of seven. He passed the Abitur at the Evangelisch Stiftisches Gymnasium Gütersloh . He studied with Hans Richter-Haaser at the Northwest German Music Academy in Detmold and graduated in 1953 with the concert exam with distinction. He also took master classes with Alfred Cortot in Lausanne and with Wilhelm Kempff in Positano .

Schnurr has given concerts internationally in Europe as well as in America, Africa, the Far East and especially in Japan, where he performed frequently from 1986 to 2000. From 1957 he taught at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold , from 1965 as a professor for piano. In 1971 he was appointed director of the Music Education Seminar. From 1972 he was first deputy director and from 1982 to 1993 rector of the university. In 1997 he retired for reasons of age, but gave master classes until 2017.

  • 1959: 1st prize at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich
  • 1982: Honorary member of JPTA (Japanese Piano Teachers Association)
  • 2010: Honorary Senator of the Senate of the Detmold University of Music
