The Evangelisch Stiftische Gymnasium (short ESG) is one of the two high schools in the district town of Gütersloh with 1,156 students in the 2012/13 school year.

history

The grammar school was founded in 1851 as a private school on the initiative of pietistic Protestants. A half-timbered school building was erected in 1852/53. In 1854, the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV declared the ESG a public high school with the special rights of a board of trustees . This privilege, which is still valid to this day, enables the Board of Trustees to influence both the content of the school and its staff selection.

In 1871 Johannes Kuhlo , the founder of the Protestant trombone choir movement in Germany, founded the high school trombone choir Gütersloh - today one of the oldest school trombone choirs in Germany - at the ESG . In 1878 the first soccer club in what is now North Rhine-Westphalia, the Gymnasial-Spielverein Gütersloh , was founded at the ESG . The institution's Protestant roots can still be seen today in the school seal, which shows a cross with the Latin saying In hoc signo vinces , as well as the inscription Soli Deo Gloria above the main entrance.

On August 17, 1926, the foundation stone for a new building based on designs by Gustav Kassbaum was laid behind the old building, which had become too small ; The old building was still used during the construction work. After the school had moved to the new building, which was inaugurated on July 31, 1928, the old school was demolished, creating a forecourt between the new building and the street. The total costs for the new building, including the interior fittings, were RM 778,000  . The main building was placed under monument protection in 1984 and entered in the list of architectural monuments in Gütersloh with the monument number A 042 .

Recent history has been shaped in particular by various collaborations with the Bertelsmann Foundation founded by Reinhard Mohn in 1977 (1980–1999). You owe the school u. a. its own media library (since 1984) and the gradual introduction of laptops as regular work equipment for every student (beginning: 1997/98).

today

The school was expanded several times due to the increasing number of students. Some years had six classes. A total of around 1200 students currently attend the school, where around 80 teachers teach. The school is run by Martin Fugmann. Since the 2011/12 school year, the ESG has been bilingual (English) from the 7th year with two classes each. First, the subject of history is taught in grades 8 and 9 biology and geography in the foreign language. The ESG has been "IB World School" since November 2013 and offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) degree.

In addition to regular subject lessons, the school offers a range of extra-curricular activities. The previously purely religious education was supplemented by music, literature and art as well as sport. The traditional high school trombone choir Gütersloh and the choir should be mentioned in particular .

Since 1999 the school has offered its students the opportunity to study with a personal laptop. Initially only individual “laptop classes” were formed, since 2004 every level 7 student has had the opportunity to participate in the project. The devices are leased across the school for each level and become the property of the students after level 10. In the years 2011 and 2012, the respective parent representatives opted for devices from the Toshiba Portégé R700 series.

principal

From 2010 to 2016 the grammar school was headed by the school principal Friedhelm Rachner, from the beginning of the school year 2016/17 the grammar school was headed by senior studies director Martin Fugmann.
