Hans Hilbk

Hans Hilbk (born April 14, 1925 in Hamm ; † August 21, 2013 in Gütersloh ) was a German headmaster and author of local and regional historical works. He was the holder of the Medal of Merit of the City of Gütersloh.

Life

Hilbk grew up as the son of a chief locomotive driver in Hamm. During World War II he was called up in 1943 as a 18-year-old in the Navy and became a Midshipman in captivity .

After the war he studied history and German at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster with the aim of becoming a teacher . In 1954 he became a teacher at the Evangelisch Stiftisches Gymnasium (ESG) in Gütersloh. 1959 doctorate Hilbk with a thesis on "the problem of education in the late works of Hermann Hesse " to Dr. phil. In 1964 Hilbk took over the management of the Friedrich von Bodelschwing School in Bielefeld-Bethel . In 1972 he moved back to Gütersloh at ESG, which he was director until his retirement in 1987.

Hilbk made a name for himself beyond his professional activities as a historian researching and coming to terms with the history of Gütersloh. He published the results of his local and regional historical research between 1988 and 1996 in five volumes, which illuminate the history of Gütersloh from 1815 onwards. In addition, further texts by Hilbk on local history research, but also on education and church history were published.

Hilbk volunteered in the Volkening Bildungswerk, in the Bertelsmann Foundation and as chairman of the Gütersloh local group of the German War Graves Commission .

In 1995 Hilbk received the City of Gütersloh's Medal of Merit for his services “to the well-being and reputation of Gütersloh” and in recognition of his work “in the educational, scientific and social field”. As early as 1994, the Gütersloh Heimatverein honored him with the Eickhoff Medal as the sponsor of the city ​​museum for his services to research into the city's history.

Hilbk was married and had a daughter.
