The high school trombone choir Gütersloh , founded in 1871, is a trombone choir in the East Westphalian city of Gütersloh . It consists of students from the Evangelical-Stiftisches Gymnasium in Gütersloh and is independent of the school and the teachers.

General

The high school trombone choir consists exclusively of students and is independent. The choir is led by a student as president . His motto is “Vivat crescat floreat ad multos annos”, which means “Long live, grow and prosper for many years”. Every year new members are recruited who are initially accepted into the so-called botch choir and receive lessons in playing a wind instrument, in order to later find acceptance in the actual trombone choir after passing an entrance exam. With the Abitur, students leave the trombone choir. However, the president usually leaves the trombone choir after the 11th grade in order to be able to fully prepare for the Abitur.

history

Johannes Kuhlo

The Trumpet Choir was founded in 1871 by Johannes Kuhlo , who later became known as the "Trumpet General", with seven classmates.

Originally only male members were accepted, since 1992 the trombone choir has also been open to girls. In 2016, Anne Frevert became the first girl in the history of the trombone choir to become president.

President

There have been 94 presidents since it was founded and, in office since 2016 and 2018, the first two women presidents.

uniform

At public appearances, traditional schoolboy clothing is still worn, as it was worn in 1871. It consists of a hat (also called a bum's hat ), a white shirt and black bow tie, white trousers and a black jacket with a swallow's nest.

Uniform at the Christmas concert

At the Christmas concert, the trombone choir does not play in their classic uniforms, but rather completely in black with a white shirt and without a hat or dovetail.

Entrance exam

You have to master all the pieces that are played during the Whitsun concert, tell a joke, play a recording piece of your choice and be able to play the Petersburg March , the signature music of the trombone choir, by heart. In addition, you have to be able to "draw" the circle by heart and know about the history including the first and last five presides.

Concerts and events

Pentecost concert

The Whitsun concert traditionally takes place on Whitsunday at 3 p.m. at Ibrüggers Teich in Gütersloh City Park . The program of this concert is usually a colorful mixture of modern pieces, which are listed in more detail under Repertoire , but always starting with the St. Petersburg March (see picture).

Christmas concert

The Christmas concert usually takes place on a Friday evening at 8:00 p.m. before the 2nd or 3rd Advent in the Martin Luther Church . In addition to the high school trombone choir, the choir of the Evangelisch Stiftisches Gymnasium under the direction of Thomas Rimpel, as well as a soloist (brass) accompanied by the organ, took part in recent years . It was Horst Reinkemeier, who accompanied the Christmas concerts on the organ until 2014, who, as President, let this concert take place for the first time in the Martin Luther Church.

Advent bubbles

The trombone choir is particularly active in the run-up to Christmas. So the Advent Sundays are already marked by the Advent blowing at half past three in the morning. Here the trombone choir plays divided into 3 groups, which are named after a meaningful division of Gütersloh into "north", "middle" and "south", with active, former members, and presidents, donors and friends of the trombone choir. In addition, the trombone choir takes on several extra stations every year to play in front of the hospitals, old people's homes and other social institutions in Gütersloh. The following pieces are played on Sundays:

  1. Advent: How should I receive you
  2. Advent: God's Son has come
  3. Advent: daughter of Zion
  4. Advent: Praise God you Christians all alike

Tower bubbles

The solemn end of a "trumpet choir year" is then on Christmas Eve at midnight, when the tower blowing can be heard from the balcony and turret of the Evangelical Collegiate School . At this point, the trumpet choir plays the four Advents and Oh you merry listed above once again , setting the several thousand listeners in the mood for the coming Christmas days and ending the pre-Christmas stress of the past. Traditionally, after the 12th stroke of the tower bell, the bell is struck a 13th time. The active ones on the balcony and the former ones on the turret alternately play a total of three stanzas.

Church services

The trombone choir also plays, usually every 2 weeks, in the services of the ESG. Well-known chorales are rehearsed and usually performed in combination with the organ in the auditorium or the Martin Luther Church in Gütersloh. Other school events are usually accompanied by music with the trombone choir.

Handover (concert)

The President of the Trumpet Choir changes every two to three years. At this point he is at the end of grade 11 and is about to take the important exams for the Abitur. For this reason, he will be replaced by a successor from grade 8 or 9 chosen by all trombone choristers. This concert usually takes place shortly before the summer holidays and is also very popular with former members, as they are "officially" adopted together with the President after they have left the trombone choir after graduating from high school.

Berlin free time

The trombone choir received a special honor in 2002, when the trombone choir, at that time under the direction of Kai-Nicolas Theißen, was allowed to participate in a service in the Berlin Cathedral during its Berlin leisure time . This free time took place for the second time in 2002 and was again organized by the former general superintendent Rolf Wischnath (also a former member).

Rehearsal time off

In order to prepare intensively for the annual Whitsun concert, all trombone choirs take part in a rehearsal free time over the Ascension weekend. On this occasion, the President organizes a youth hostel in Germany every year. During this free time there is the entrance test and the traditional terrain game, in which a modified version of " Capture the Flag " is played mostly in military clothing .

additional

In addition, the trombone choir can be found at constantly changing events in and around Gütersloh, in addition to various folk festivals and at Christmas markets. In these "smaller" appearances, however, usually only the small cast, consisting of the best members of each register.

repertoire

The repertoire of the trombone choir changes constantly. In the first part of the year the Whitsun concert is on the program and in the second part the Christmas concert with an annually changing program.

At the Whitsun concert mostly marches, modern pieces and film music are played. During the Christmas concert you can hear the classically influenced side of the trombone choir with works by JSBach and other contemporaries. In addition, the pieces that are also played during the turret blowing and chorales from the EC are played.
