The Martin Luther Church (before 1911: New Church or New Evangelical Church, between 1911 and 1933: Resurrection Church) is a Protestant parish church in the center of the city of Gütersloh on Berliner Platz.
history
The church was built according to plans by Christian Heyden as a neo-Gothic hall church , was originally a preaching church and intended for as many people as possible. It is somewhat smaller in terms of volume than the Catholic St. Pankratius Church , but with over 1000 seats it is the largest church in the city in terms of seating. It was completed in 1861.
The church was listed as a historical monument in 1984 . In addition to the actual building, the list of architectural monuments in Gütersloh also includes the height mark, baptismal angel, bell, altarpiece and murals, as well as nativity figures from the church . The Christmas crib (from around 1920) was Monument of the Month in Westphalia-Lippe in December 2009 .
Today the church and parish belong to the Gütersloh parish . The church is home to the night singing bell and the Gütersloh Bach Choir .
Furnishing
Baptism angel
The most important piece of furniture in the church has a baptismal angel by Bertel Thorvaldsen . It is a zinc die-cast from the Moritz Geiß workshop , Berlin . The baptismal angel was made from marble based on a model that stands in the Frauenkirche in Copenhagen and was a gift from the future Emperor Friedrich III. in gratitude for his protection in the serious railway accident at Avenwedde in 1851. The glass painter Alexander Linnemann from Frankfurt created 3 glass windows for the choir before 1900 according to the catalog of works from 1902.
organ
The organ of the Martin Luther Church was built in two stages in 1951 and 1956 by the organ building company GF Steinmeyer & Co. (Oettingen). The instrument has 60 registers ( pocket drawers ) on three manuals and a pedal . The playing and stop actions are electro-pneumatic.
In 1997/98 the instrument was restored and expanded by the Kreienbrink company . Kreienbrink added a new setting machine and a programmable roller and increased the wind pressure. The organ has been a listed building since 2016. In 2017 the instrument was restored by the company Freiburger Orgelbau Hartwig and Tilmann Späth .
The organ has 3,958 pipes . The largest measures 5.80 meters and weighs 150 kilograms.
