St. Marien is a Roman Catholic parish church in Avenwedde -Bahnhof, a district of the East Westphalian district town of Gütersloh in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany . It is a parish of the parish "Holy Cross" in the pastoral association Avenwedde-Friedrichsdorf in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .
Church, community center and rectory form a building complex surrounded by a lawn. Outside the complex there is a squat-looking, free-standing bell tower .
The facility was built from 1975 to 1977 according to the plans of the architect Gisberth Hülsmann from Niederbachem . The altar, the ambo , the baptismal font and a cross were also created according to his plans.
The walls of the building complex are almost windowless to the outside and are slightly sunk into the ground. The stone-paved floor of the almost square church hall is also lower than the inner courtyard of the complex. Arranged in the center is an altar island, which is surrounded on three sides by church stalls. The ceiling structure is exposed. The walls consist of different colored bricks , which form ornaments through different wall types. Paintings by the Cologne artist Klaus Balke can be found in three places : on the concrete outer wall of the confessional room, the motif takes up the parable of the prodigal son , on the sacristy there is a passion motif, and the tabernacle is adorned with a burning bush .
