description
Vegetative characteristics
The cat's head sun rose is a subshrub that reaches heights of 10 to 40 centimeters. The above-ground parts of the plant are hairy gray-white-felty ( indument ).
The simple leaves are arranged opposite each other and have short stems. The small, simple, relatively thick and slightly fleshy leaf blade is elliptical or egg-shaped with a length of 6 to 15 millimeters and a width of 2 to 10 millimeters. It is curled up sideways and covered with felty star hairs ( trichomes ) on both sides .
Generative characteristics
The flowering period extends from March to April. The stalked flowers are arranged in compact, zymous inflorescences.
The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The sepals , in two unequal circles, are hairy long protruding. This creates the appearance of a small cat's head in the bud. The yellow petals are 9 to 12 millimeters long.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.
Occurrence
The cat's head sun rose is found in Morocco , Algeria , Spain , Mallorca and Sardinia . It thrives on coastal rocks and in sparse forests over limestone .
Taxonomy
The first description of Helianthemum caput-felis was made in 1838 by Pierre Edmond Boissier in Elenchus plantarum novarum ... , page 16. The specific epithet caput-felis is from the Latin words caput for "head" and felis derived for "cat", meaning "head the cat ”.
