The name "Avenwedde" has two meanings. One translates the name “ovenwide” from Old Low German as “sheep pasture”. The design of the speaking municipal coat of arms was derived from this declaration in 1955 , a golden ram on a black background. The alternative interpretation translates the name as "Wald des Ovo", which would indicate the owner of a taxable farm.

The former Avenwedde office had its own coat of arms, this corresponded to the municipal coat of arms shown above, supplemented by the six-spoke wheel of the former Reckenberg part of the Principality of Osnabrück. The wheel can still be found today in the coats of arms of the Gütersloh district and the city of Rheda-Wiedenbrück .

The Avenwedder themselves also call their place "Bonnevie" (also: Bonewie). This name is said to have originated from a corruption of the French “bonne ville”, which means “beautiful village”, and comes from the time of the French occupation of Westphalia under Napoleon.
