Pavenstädt is a western district of the East Westphalian district town of Gütersloh in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

One of the oldest evidence of human settlement in the urban area of Gütersloh is the "Pavenstädter Riesenbecher ", which is dated to the 17th century BC and proves that Pavenstädt was already settled at that time. The mug made of yellow, coarsely skimmed , brittle-crumbly clay is 40 cm high and holds 12 liters. There is no comparable find of this size in Westphalia. The Pavenstadt giant beaker was found in 1951 in the area where the Dalke and Wapel meet and is now in the LWL Museum for Archeology , Herne. A replica can be seen in the Gütersloh City Museum .

Pavenstädt was first mentioned in a document around 1088 in the Herzebrocker Heberolle as "Padenstedi". The name means frog spawning site .

The peasantry Pavenstädt belonged to the rule Rheda . The Dalke formed the border to the Kattenstroth peasantry and thus to the Reckenberg district , which belonged to the Prince Diocese of Osnabrück . To this day, the river forms a natural border between the current districts of Pavenstädt and Kattenstroth.

In 1722 the first Jewish cemetery was built in the vicinity of Gütersloh. The "Judenbrink", where burials were carried out until 1866, is located opposite today's Johannesfriedhof on Herzebrocker Straße. The few preserved tombs are under monument protection.

From 1815 Pavenstädt belonged to Prussia , from 1843 to the municipality of Gütersloh-Land , before it was incorporated into the city of Gütersloh on April 1, 1910.

1935 was z. The construction of the Gütersloh airfield for the air force of the newly founded Wehrmacht started partly in Pavenstadt . The overburden - this is where Gütersloh's highest Ice Age dune was located - was used for the construction of the Reichsautobahn (today's A2). The dune landscape, known as Gütersloh Switzerland , was almost completely destroyed.

Pavenstädt is still dominated by agriculture in the north and west of the area, whereas in the south and east it was connected to the Gütersloh core town . The construction of the Gütersloh district building in the south of Pavenstadt, completed in 1997, also contributed to this.

Architectural monuments

More than a dozen entries in the monument list of the city of Gütersloh relate to objects in the Pavenstadt area, including the old and new Jewish cemetery, the coat of arms of the Counts of Rheda on the Neue Mühle and, as the only ground monument, a settlement from the Neolithic to pre-Roman Iron Age on the Herzebrocker Street.

societies

The oldest club in the district is the Pavenstädt Schützenverein (SVP), founded in 1929, which has almost 450 members (as of 2011). His rifle festival, in particular the cow dung roulette , has become a regular item on the Gütersloh event calendar. The “Traditional and Hunting Archery” section has its own course.
