Niehorst [ 'niːhɔʁst ] is a northern district of Gütersloh in East Westphalia-Lippe , which was incorporated into the current district town of Gütersloh in 1970 as part of the municipal reorganization.
geography
Niehorst is in the east of the Westphalian Bay .
The Lutter forms the southern border, the Lichtebach part of the northern border . Another body of water that runs across the local area is the Krullsbach .
The landscape around the main settlement is characterized by arable land, meadows, small pine forests and some birch trees. In between there are a few farms .

Marienfeld | GT- Isselhorst
GT- Blankenhagen | GT- Nordhorn |
The western border of the district to Marienfeld is not only a municipality border, but historically also a religious and cultural border. The Protestant Ravensberger Land went as far as Niehorst , and the Catholic Münsterland began from Marienfeld .
history
In 1556, the independent Johann Nigehorster was mentioned for the first time in the Ravensberger Urbar . At that time Johann the Peaceful , Count von Ravensberg , had eight new farms settled in the area of today's Niehorst (seven of which still exist today). This area was referred to in the land register after Nigehorsters Hof as "in the Nigehorstere". Curious: Today the eponymous courtyard (now “Hof Niehörster”) is not in the Gütersloh district of Niehorst, but around 50 m across the border in the Harsewinkel city area. “Guilt” are probably the ancestors of the Niehörsters who refused to accept the Protestant faith of the Count of Ravensberg in the 16th century and stayed at the Catholic Marienfeld Monastery .
In 1969, the Niehorst municipal council decided to join the city of Gütersloh and thus spoke out against the possible connection to the city of Bielefeld . This assignment came into effect on January 1, 1970. The territorial reform of 1973 made Niehorst part of the Gütersloh district .
Religions
Niehorst belongs to the parish Isselhorst . Niehorst never had its own church. Of the 607 residents with their main residence in Niehorst (as of December 2000) 377 or 62.1% are Protestant and 116 or 19.1% are Catholic . 114 or 18.8% belong to another or no religious community.

coat of arms
Blazon : “In a silver shield under red rafters a red half-timbered farmhouse with a large Deelentor and gable decorations ; in the Deelentor a golden eagle in a red shield. "
Justification for the coat of arms: The red rafter stands for the former affiliation to the Grafschaft Ravensberg . The eagle shows the coat of arms of the Counts of Rietberg , who were once influential landlords here. |
Parties
The first CDU local association in the parish Isselhorst was founded on January 3, 1969 in Niehorst. A few weeks later the CDU local association "Kirchspiel Isselhorst" was founded, which the Niehorst local association joined.

Attractions
In Niehorst there are some farms, some of which are more than 500 years old, with ornately decorated Deelentor arches. The Diekmann farm in particular is distinguished by its external decoration in the half-timbered houses . The Eichenhof from 1807 is on the list of architectural monuments in Gütersloh .
The “Niehorster Heide” around the former NATO tank farm is known as the “Little Senne ”. On the legally protected biotope with its heather and sandy grassland , a large variety of plants and animals from nutrient-poor locations can be observed. There are stings , field crickets , woodlarks , tree pipits and a variety of lichens, mosses and typical plants such as heather .
Economy and Infrastructure
Niehorst is characterized by scattered settlement . There is no town center in the classic sense.
At the beginning of the 1960s, an industrial area was designated in Niehorst . Small industrial and craft businesses have settled here. The Huxohl company alone has developed to supra-regional importance, having developed from a small mill with a saw frame into a timber trade and sawmill operating nationwide. Otherwise, the district is economically characterized by small and medium-sized agriculture. Since the beginning of the new millennium, Hof Birkenhake has been the first and only provider in the Gütersloh urban area to offer farm holidays, thereby opening up Niehorst for tourism.
A wind turbine has been located on the An den Sandgruben road since 2000 . Her tower is 85 meters high.
