Herberto Helder (actually Herberto Hélder de Oliveira , born November 23, 1930 in Funchal , Madeira , † March 23, 2015 in Cascais ) was a Portuguese poet.

Life

Herberto Helder grew up in a family of Jewish origin, and when he was 16 he moved to Lisbon . He studied law and humanities at the University in Coimbra However, the study stopped prematurely. He later worked for a bank and as an advertising agent.

He mainly published volumes of poetry , but also prose . Helder is considered to be an important representative of the newer Portuguese experimental poetry. Together with António Aragão , he published the first anthology Poesia Experimental in the Cadernos de Hoje series in 1964 by MONDAR. Herberto Helder made sure that his books of poetry were only printed in small editions and forbade new editions. This corresponded to his attitude that the texts are ephemeral. Since he was also convinced that texts could always be changed, however, poems appeared several times in revised form. Herberto Helder also used materials for the press sparingly. There are very few photos and interviews with him. He also did not want any honors in the form of naming streets, schools or squares after him.

In 1994, Helder was awarded the Portuguese Prémio Pessoa Culture Prize.
