Alexander Linnemann

Alexander Linnemann (born July 14, 1839 in Frankfurt am Main ; † September 22, 1902 there ) was a German architect , glass painter and craftsman .

Linnemann first studied art for one year at the University of Giessen , then architecture at the Bauakademie in Berlin. After graduating, he worked in Dresden for several years , a. a. on the restoration of the Albrechtsburg in Meißen . In 1866 he founded an architecture office in Mainz ; there he participated in the restoration of the cathedral .

In 1872 he returned to Frankfurt and ran an architecture office here until 1877. In addition to various of his own orders, his work on the new construction of the stock exchange (1878, architects: Rudolf Heinrich Burnitz and Oskar Sommer ) should be emphasized.

From 1878, under the influence of his friends Eduard Jakob von Steinle and Peter Becker, he turned to glass painting . In 1880 he and Steinle were commissioned to design the interior of the Frankfurt Cathedral, which was rebuilt after a fire .

Linnemann created paintings for more than 100 churches and secular buildings. Many of his works were lost due to the destruction in the bombing war . a. the windows of the Katharinenkirche in Frankfurt, designed by Steinle and Linnemann between 1873 and 1906 .

Linnemann died in Frankfurt on September 22, 1902. His grave is in the main cemetery .

His two sons Otto Linnemann and Rudolf Linnemann continued their father's work.
