Johannes Mohn (born June 16, 1856 in Niederwambach ( Westerwald ), † November 2, 1930 in Gütersloh ) was a German publisher .

Life

The pastor's son Mohn attended grammar school in Neuwied until 1872 , after which he switched to the Evangelisch Stiftisches Gymnasium Gütersloh , where he passed the Abitur in 1874. He was unable to realize his original dream of being a pastor because he did not have a powerful voice due to an asthma problem. He therefore completed an apprenticeship as a bookseller at C. Bertelsmann Verlag from 1874 to 1876 . After his apprenticeship, he worked in various bookshops in Berlin, Munich and Basel.

In 1881 Johannes Mohn married Friederike Bertelsmann (* 1859; † 1946), daughter of Heinrich and granddaughter of Carl Bertelsmann , the founder of the Gütersloh printing and publishing house Bertelsmann . In the same year he became an authorized signatory in the family business. As the Friederike brothers died early, Heinrich Bertelsmann transferred the company's business to his son-in-law in 1887. Johannes Mohn managed the publishing house until 1921 and thus represents the third generation of the Bertelsmann family. Under his leadership the number of employees rose to 85. Under the pressure of the experiences of the First World War , he handed over the management to his son Heinrich Mohn .

The publisher held numerous offices and memberships. Among other things, he was curator of the Evangelisch Stiftisches Gymnasium and, with interruptions, city councilor from 1891 to 1919. Poppy was a religious person throughout his life. He was presbyter and church master as well as board member of the Rheinische Missionsgesellschaft , the Westphalian Mission Conference, the German-Evangelical Missionary Aid and the Lutheran Conference of Minden-Ravensberg. In 1911 Johannes Mohn was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class, for his services to the parish.

In 1907 he founded the Westfälische Pflanzungsgesellschaft GmbH for the economic development of German East Africa . For this he acted as managing director of a plantation in Philippshof near Wilhelmstal , where coffee was grown in the Usambara mountains . Johannes Mohn was also a board member of the Association of Protestant Booksellers and the Association of Publishers of Christian Literature. In 1927 he had a private park laid out in Gütersloh, which is known today as the Mohns Park recreation area .
