Hermann Eickhoff (born May 3, 1853 in Gütersloh ; † 1934 ) was a German Lutheran theologian, teacher and local historian in Hamm .

Hermann Eickhoff was born in Gütersloh as the son of the teacher and organist Friedrich Hermann Eickhoff and his wife Anna Frederike Louise née Bertelsmann. His grandfather was Carl Bertelsmann , the founder of the Bertelsmann group. He had three siblings, including Paul Eickhoff (* 1850 , † 1931 ), who like his brother was a teacher and local historian.

Life

Hermann Eickhoff attended the Protestant grammar school in Gütersloh. He received the school leaving certificate on September 3, 1871 . Then Hermann Eickhoff began studying theology and philosophy in Leipzig and Göttingen. In Göttingen he became a member of the Göttingen Wingolf . After a probationary year and work as a teacher in Flensburg , he switched to his old grammar school in Gütersloh at Easter 1880. His dissertation, History of the City of Wiedenbrück in the Thirty Years' War , was published in 1882. In 1883 he went to the Schleswig Cathedral School . In 1894 he was appointed high school professor. From 1899 he worked at the Hammonense grammar school . On April 1, 1918 , Eickhoff retired.

Hermann Eickhoff gained importance through numerous publications that deal with the history of the city of Hamm. In addition, he published theological, pedagogical and church history writings. Eickhoff was also a representative of the Lutheran Community of the County of Mark in the General Evangelical Lutheran Conference .

Honors

In Gütersloh, Eickhoffstrasse was given its name on the 50th anniversary of Hermann Eickhoff's father's death in 1936. However, it was not named after Friedrich Hermann Eickhoff, but after his sons Hermann and Paul.
