Oštrelj is a settlement in the municipality of Bosanski Petrovac in northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina . The population has decreased significantly; in 2013 there were still five residents.

geography

Oštrelj is about 12 kilometers from Bosanski Petrovac. The village is located in an area with rich deciduous and coniferous forests on a ridge between the Klekovača and Osječenica mountains below 1330 m above sea level. M. high peak Oštrelj and at 1031 meters the highest point on the road from Petrovac to Drvar .

At the end of the 19th century, the Bavarian entrepreneur Otto Steinbeis began exporting wood products from Bosnia. His company operated its own narrow-gauge railway, the so-called Steinbeisbahn , with the main line Prijedor - Srnetica - Knin with a station on the pass in Oštrelj. The Steinbeisbahn came into the possession of the ŠIPAD forestry company after the First World War. At that time Oštrelj had 360 inhabitants and a large number of commuters. In the village there was a primary school, a police station, several restaurants and various shops.

In Oštrelj there is a train that was used by Josip Broz Tito and the Yugoslav partisans he led during the Second World War . The train has been restored and is under protection as a national cultural monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

After the XIV Winter Olympics in Sarajevo in 1984, Oštrelj became a winter sports resort with a ski lift.

population

The discontinuation of rail operations in 1975 led to a sharp decline in population. The Bosnian war then displaced most of the remaining residents.
