FF 33e. Subtitle: “Wolfchen”, the first seaplane that was used on the high seas from a warship ( SMS Wolf (1913) ).

The Friedrichshafen FF 33 was a German military aircraft from Flugzeugbau Friedrichshafen , which was built from 1914 in different versions. They were multi-stemmed, braced biplanes that were used as sea scouts .

variants

In the first machines, the observer sat in front of the pilot, which was changed from variant FF 33b so that the pilot sat in front and the observer behind could operate a movable machine gun .

The variant FF 33e was unarmed, but received radio equipment. In some cases, a double control was installed and the FF 33 was used as a training aircraft.

Later versions from the FF 33f were smaller in size and were delivered with two-legged wings. In addition, there was later a forward-firing rigid MG that was operated by the pilot. In September 1916, the last variant was the FF 33l, which served as the basis for the Friedrichshafen FF 49 . About 470 FF 33 were built.

FF 33 on the Black Sea

The four FF 33e and four FF 33l, which had been stationed in the German naval air station Pejnerdjik near Varna on the Black Sea since 1916, were handed over to the Bulgarian Navy in June 1918. They were destroyed in 1920 by order of the Allied Control Commission under the terms of the Peace Treaty.

Replica

Since mid-2009, a group of enthusiasts around aircraft construction in Friedrichshafen, including some descendants of Theodor Kober , has been building a flight-capable replica of the FF 33e true to the original. The project has probably been discontinued, the last message is from January 2011.
