Fritz Beck (chemist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fritz Paul Beck (born March 5, 1931 in Stuttgart , † February 15, 2009 in Essen ) was a German chemist .

As the son of a craftsman, at the age of twelve he undertook his first experiments in the field of electrochemistry with the investigation of Leclanché elements . From 1951 to 1956 he studied chemistry at the University of Stuttgart . With his thesis Electrochemical Aspects of the Catalytic Hydrogenation of Platinum Contacts in Buffered Solutions , he obtained his doctorate under Heinz Gerischer in 1960 .

Then he went to Ludwigshafen am Rhein and worked for the company BASF . There he developed semiconductors based on polymers such as poly-P-phenylenes and polyacetylene . He also gained fundamental knowledge in applying paint to surfaces using electrochemical methods.

Since 1978 he has taught and researched at the University of Duisburg in the field of electrochemistry.

His main topics included the research of organic electrosynthesis, of capillary gap cells, of electrochemical storage and questions of electrodeposition in polymer layers. By the time he was sixty, he had published 158 papers and registered 62 patents.
