Fritz Kobel

Fritz Kobel (born May 10, 1896 in Schleumen , Canton of Bern , Switzerland ; † February 12, 1981 in Wädenswil near Zurich ) was a Swiss fruit, wine, vegetable and horticultural scientist.

Kobel studied botany and received his doctorate in 1920 from the University of Bern with a dissertation on the biology of the rust fungi found on clover species. In 1921 he joined the Federal Research Institute for Fruit, Viticulture and Horticulture in Wädenswil, where he was director from 1944 to 1961. As a titular professor, he held lectures on genetics and fruit, viticulture and vegetable growing at the ETH Zurich .

Kobel achieved great merits in the field of fruit growing , above all, with pioneering research into the problems of fertilization and fruit formation. His "textbook on fruit growing on a physiological basis", which has been translated into four languages, is one of the "classic" works of fruit growing literature. Kobel was an honorary doctorate from the University of Hanover .
