Athletic career

His career in the GDR league began on May 27, 1956. In the encounter on the 11th match day ( SC Dynamo Berlin - SC Turbine Erfurt 3-2) he was used by SC Turbine as a half-right striker. Schmidt also played the following six point games, in which he was also called up as a center forward and in the half-left attack. On the 17th matchday he injured himself so badly that he had to be substituted and in 1956 was only substituted once on the 21st matchday for seven minutes. He was only able to play for Erfurt in the major league again in the 1958 season. He was used immediately on the 1st match day and scored his first league goal in his standard position half right (leading goal to 2-1 victory over Motor Zwickau ). After five point games, Schmidt had to sit out again and only came back regularly after the summer break. At the end of the season he had 18 league appearances and five goals. In the 1959 season, the first half of the season was successful for Schmidt, he only missed a point game. In the second half of the season he fell out again for eight league games, so he only made 17 missions and two goals. At the end of the season, Turbine Erfurt had to relegate from the league. The almost 32-year-old Schmidt then ended his career in high-class football.
