Front altar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Front altar is a seldom used term for the high altar of a Catholic church. The Middle High German vrōnaltar is derived from Old High German frō = "Lord", to which frōno = "(possession) of the gods, divine" belongs. An analogous word formation is " Corpus Christi ". The medieval high altar of the Strasbourg cathedral , which was removed in the 17th century, is regularly referred to in literature as the "front altar ".
