Frontal zone
The planetary frontal zone is the area of west wind drift between the 35th and 65th parallel . This is where the temperate latitudes are found , which are located between the tropics and the polar regions . A gradient wind arises due to the pressure difference between the tropical warm air and the polar cold air . This is deflected by the Coriolis force to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere and thus becomes a westerly wind.
As soon as the stable westerly wind meanders, more fronts are formed. It is also influenced by the jet stream. This meandering is measured for the Atlantic − Europe area using the Northatlantic Oscillation Index (NAO), among others .
