Chilblains on the feet

Frostbite or pernio (Latin Perniones ) are nodular lesions rotbläuliche due to cold exposure , which in predisposed people, often young women, may occur. Mostly the extensor sides of the fingers and toes, the heels or the lower legs are affected. When rewarming, itching occurs and pain is also possible. Without renewed exposure to the cold, the skin changes recede within one to two weeks. The healing of more pronounced findings, especially those on the thighs ( cold panniculitis ) or those with ulcers , can take significantly longer.

Antihistamines can be used to treat itching . If the inflammation is severe, ointments containing glucocorticoids can be applied.

As a preventive measure , those affected should protect themselves against especially damp cold by wearing suitable clothing.
