The pedestrian bridge at Torhausplatz in Kelheim in Lower Bavaria spans the Main-Danube Canal .

It is the first curved bridge with a cable structure on one side. The design received an award at the 1988 Civil Engineering Prize .

history

The previous structure, the Altmühltorbrücke , had to give way to the expansion of the Altmühl into the Main-Danube Canal. The pedestrian bridge was built here between 1986 and 1988. It was the first one-sided suspended bridge with curved bridge girders.

construction

Straight ramps about thirty meters long , each with a support along the canal bank in a westerly direction, create sufficient initial height and are connected to a beam curved by 180 degrees in plan, which hangs on one side on a cable structure , the carrying cable of which is deflected on two inclined pylons and in abutments anchored to the ramps.

With a wingspan of 61.84 meters, the clearance for shipping is 6.85 meters.

Pavement slab

The construction dimensions of the continuous prestressed concrete beam on ramps and arches are 4.18 meters wide and one meter high. The course of the curvature of this so-called "circular ring girder" corresponds approximately to half an ellipse, with a radius of curvature at the transition to the ramps of 18.89 m and a maximum of 37.79 meters in the middle of the bridge. At the inner edge of the beam there is an area about 0.5 meters wide to which the 38 hangers are attached. At the top of the beam are 22 strand tendons . The usable width of the walkway with mastic asphalt paving is 3.30 meters.

Cable structure

The steel carrying cable has a diameter of 90 millimeters and is anchored in abutments under the ramps. Two 18-meter-high, inclined tubular steel masts guide the suspension cable over the curve of the bridge. They have a diameter of 660 millimeters and are each held in place by two 117 millimeter thick steel guy ropes. The hangers made of 30 millimeter thick steel rods are attached to the suspension cable at a distance of around 2.3 meters.

Construction work

The bridge was built before the canal was completed. It was therefore possible to create the pavement slab on scaffolding.
