The fox-headed vireo ( Hylophilus ochraceiceps ), also known as the brown-headed Hylophilus, is a widespread representative of the songbirds from the Vireos family .
features
The small, up to eleven centimeters large bird has dark brown back / head plumage and the throat is colored gray. The belly plumage is light brown. The strong beak is black and the legs are gray. The forehead and the crown are yellowish to brown in color. There are no external differences in plumage between males and females.
Way of life
The sociable birds roam the forest in small groups. There they find insects and other invertebrates on the leaves of shrubs and small trees, on which they feed.
Reproduction
The bowl-shaped nest, in which the female lays two white eggs with brown spots, is attached to a fork at the top. The breeding period of the species is 14 days. The nestling duration of the young, which are cared for by both adult birds, is about two weeks.
distribution
The species occurs in the forests and rainforests of southern Mexico across Central and South America to Bolivia and Brazil.
Danger
The IUCN classifies the species as ( Least Concern ) potentially endangered due to its large distribution area .
Subspecies
Three subspecies are described, which differ mainly in their color, size and habitat requirements. Their distribution areas stretches from southern Mexico to the Amazon rainforest. According to the IOC World Bird List, the following subspecies are distinguished:
- Hylophilus ochraceiceps ochraceiceps Sclater, PL , 1860 The nominate form occurs from southern Mexico via Belize and northern Guatemala .
- Hylophilus ochraceiceps pallidipectus ( Ridgway , 1903) This subspecies is present from southern Guatemala via Honduras to northwestern Panama .
- Hylophilus ochraceiceps pacificus Parkes , 1991 This subspecies is at home in southeastern Costa Rica and Panama.
- Hylophilus ochraceiceps nelsoni ( Todd , 1929) is only found in eastern Panama.
- Hylophilus ochraceiceps bulunensis Hartert , 1902 Its distribution area extends over the extreme east of Panama in the west of Colombia and the north-west of Ecuador .
- Hylophilus ochraceiceps ferrugineifrons Sclater, PL , 1862 is native to southeastern Colombia, southern Venezuela , western-central Guyana , northwestern Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru.
- Hylophilus ochraceiceps viridior ( Todd , 1929) This subspecies is found in southern Peru and northern Bolivia
- Hylophilus ochraceiceps luteifrons Sclater, PL , 1881 This subspecies can be seen in eastern Venezuela , the Guyanas and northern Brazil .
- Hylophilus ochraceiceps lutescens ( Snethlage, E , 1914) This subspecies is native to north-central Brazil to the south of the Amazon.
- Hylophilus ochraceiceps rubrifrons Sclater, PL & Salvin , 1867 This subspecies occurs from northeastern Brazil to the southern Amazon.
