The Fujii-dera ( Japanese 葛 井 寺 ) is a Buddhist temple in the city of Fujiidera , Osaka prefecture in Japan . The temple is associated with the Shingon-shu belief . The main portrait of the temple is a statue of the thousand-armed Kannon . The Fujii-dera is the fifth temple of the Saigoku pilgrimage route ( 西 国 三十 三 箇 所 , Saigoku sanjūsankasho ).

overview

The temple is said to have been founded by order of the emperor Shōmu in 725 and inaugurated by the monk Gyōki . It became part of a system of temples where prayer for the welfare of the state and the imperial family was to take place ( Kokubun-ji ). Archaeological finds on the temple grounds confirm the founding of the temple in the 8th century and the connection to the Fujii family, descendants of the royal house of Baekje , who emigrated to Japan. The temple was sponsored by the imperial family through the centuries. Renovations by Prince Abo 806 and Ariwara no Narihira are known. The politician Sugawara no Michizane was one of the temple's patrons . In 1096, Fujii Yasumoto had a number of buildings restored. The emperors Go-Daigo and Go-Murakami are said to have been particular admirers of the main portrait. In 1510 the temple was destroyed in an earthquake and renovated in 1602 at the instigation of Toyotomi Hideyori . The four gates of the temple date from this time. The current main hall was completed in 1776.

The main portrait of a thousand-armed and eleven-headed Kannon , made using dry lacquer technology, is classified as a national art treasure of Japan and is considered the work of Keibun'e and Keishukun. The figure shows 1000 small and 42 larger arms.
