Charles / MGH is the name of a subway station owned by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) on the border of the Boston neighborhoods of West End and Beacon Hill in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . It lies on the eponymous Charles Street opposite the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston end of the Longfellow Bridge and provides access to the line Red Line .
history
The Charles / MGH station was opened on February 27, 1932. In 2007 a renovation followed, in the course of which a new access building with escalators and lifts was built, so that the station has been completely barrier-free since the reopening on February 17, 2007.

The underground station has two tracks that are accessible via two side platforms .

The tube station is on Charles Circle at the intersection of Cambridge Street and Charles Street . It is completely barrier-free . After the demolition of Atlantic Avenue Elevated , Charlestown Elevated , Washington Street Elevated and Causeway Elevated, the station is one of the few remaining elevated train stations in the MBTA network, alongside Beachmont , Science Park , Malden Center , Wollaston and Fields Corner .

The station is one of the few in the MBTA network that does not offer connections to bus lines .
In the immediate vicinity of the subway station are the former prison and today's luxury hotel Charles Street Jail , the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and the Massachusetts General Hospital . Also nearby is the Longfellow Bridge over the Charles River , and the Charles River Bike Path passes the station some distance away.
