The lines complement the services of the MBTA Commuter Rail and the Boston trams and subways.

The company's buses are powered by diesel fuel as well as LPG or diesel-electric . In addition, the MBTA operates a bus rapid transit system with the Silver Line . Most of the vehicles used are equipped with low-floor technology , wheelchair ramps and audio and video announcement systems.

The internal guidelines of the MBTA stipulate that all residents in areas with a population density greater than 1900 people per km² within walking distance - defined as 0.25  mi (0.4  km ) - must have access to local public transport. A large part of this requirement is covered by trolleybuses and omnibuses.
