Fujimoto Tesseki ( Japanese 藤 本 鉄 石 , real name: Katayama Shinkin (片 山 真 金), other artist names: Baisaiō (売 菜 翁), Tekkanshi (鉄 寒士), Tetsumon (鉄 門), Tomon (都 門); born 14. April 1816 in Higashi Kawahara ( Okayama Prefecture ); died November 6, 1863 ) was a Japanese fighter against the Shogunate at the end of the Edo period and a painter of the Nanga school .

life and work

Fujimoto Tesseki was the son of the Katayama (片 山) family who lived in Higasahi-Kawahara in Bizen Province . He was later adopted by the Fujimoto family, subordinates of the Ikeda clan who resided in Okayama. When Fujimoto was 20 years old, he began studying at the Han school "Shizutanigakō" (閑 谷 学校), while studying painting under the Han Confucianist, Itō Kachiku (伊藤 花 竹).

Fujimoto went to Kyoto around 1849 and then toured western Japan. In 1859 he returned to Kyoto, where he got caught up in the clashes between the shogunate supporters and the supporters of the restoration of imperial power. Fujimoto joined the latter and took a leading role within the Tenchūgumi (天 誅 組), a group that wanted to advance the imperial cause. Together with Matsumoto Keidō (松本 奎 堂; 1831–1863) and Yoshimura Toratarō (吉 村 虎 太郎; 1837–1863) he put troops together to Nakayama Tadamitsu (中山 忠 光; 1845–1864) at the Battle of Yamato Totsukawa (大 和 十津川) support. He then fell in battle.

Fujimoto was trained in the martial arts, calligraphy, and painting. He initially preferred the northern school style, but then switched to Nanga.
