The Fukidake ( Japanese 吹 (き) 竹 , English “blow bamboo”), also called Fukizutsu ( 吹 (き) 筒 , English “blowpipe”), is a blowpipe from Japan.

description

The Fukidake was used as a hunting weapon and was probably not used as a weapon of war. In addition, blowguns are also called fukidake or, more precisely, hifukidake ( 火 吹 き „," fire-blown bamboo ") for lighting the fire .

The older version consists of an approximately 275 cm long tube . It is made of two parts that could be joined together to form a launch tube. Several layers of strong, heavy paper ( minogami ) were wrapped around the sections during construction to reinforce it and make it airtight. At the top it is equipped with a small mouthpiece. The inside diameter of the pipe is about 0.63 cm. The arrows are made of bamboo and have feathers made of wrapped paper at the end .

A more recent version, used by boys for bird hunting, consists of a tube about 150 cm long. The mouthpiece is attached to the side of the tube and is funnel-shaped . The end of the tube has an end piece that is shaped like a walking stick. A wooden, pointed stopper is attached to this handle , which serves to push the arrow inserted at the end until it is in the firing position a little below the mouthpiece and at the same time closes and seals the end of the blowpipe. The outside can be decorated with carvings .
