Fulbert of Cambrai

Fulbert (Latin Fulbertus ; † August 17, probably 956 ) was Bishop of Cambrai and Arras in what is now northeastern France from around 933 to 956.

Life

Fulbert came from Viluwa , probably Sint-Stevens-Weluwe in Brabant . Probably at the end of 933 he was ordained Bishop of Cambrai and Arras by Archbishop Artold von Reims , although his predecessor is said to have died at the beginning of the following year. Fulbert found himself in several disputes with Count Isaac von Cambrai over the rights of rule in the city.

In the 940s he approached the German King Otto I , to whose empire Cambrai had belonged for a short time. After the death of Count Isaak in 948, Fulbert was given the right to rule over the city and gave the monastery of St-Géry to the Monastery of Cambrai. Afterwards, there was a decade-long dispute about the relics of Saints Autbert and Gaugerich requested in return for the Moritzkloster in Magdeburg.

Fulbert sided with Artold as one of the few bishops in the dispute over the archbishopric of Reims and was the only bishop of the archdiocese in office who was present at the synod in Ingelheim in June 948 and addressed the concerns of Artold and Otto I. . supported.

Fulbert cultivated good contacts with the Counts of Flanders, in whose domain part of his dioceses lay. He died on August 17th, probably in 956.
