Fulgencio Yegros

Fulgencio Yegros y Franco de Torres (* 1780 in Quyquyhó; † July 17, 1821 in Asunción ) was the first president of Paraguay from June 19, 1811 to October 12, 1813 and from February 12, 1814 to June 12, 1814.

Life

Yegros came from a family with a long military tradition, which had belonged to the leading class in the country since the time of the first conquistadors , and had a military career himself. He studied in Asunción and then went to the army. He gained his first combat experience in 1802 against the Portuguese. In 1807 he was a member of the Paraguayan unit that defended Buenos Aires and Montevideo during the British invasions on the Río de la Plata . In 1810 he became a captain and was installed as governor of Misiones . He commanded the troops that defeated Manuel Belgrano's Paraguay expedition in 1810 .

Yegros and Pedro Juan Caballero were the military leaders of the May 14th 1811 revolution that led to Paraguay's independence. He was first president of the Junta Superior Gubernativa . Then Yegros and José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia jointly became consuls of the republic along the lines of the French Revolution . He founded the first military academy in independent Paraguay.

Yegros was more of a soldier than a politician and, as Consul of Francia, was pushed more and more into the background. After his second term in office, Francia became sole ruler and Yegros withdrew from public life on his property.

In 1820 Yegros took part in an uprising against Francia. After the suppression of the uprising Yegros was imprisoned and on 17 July 1821 executed .
