Fulmar Island is an island off the coast of Queen Marie Land . In the group of Haswell Islands , it is immediately south of Sykow Island .
She was discovered by the team at the West Base on the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . However, they erroneously mapped it together with the Sykow Island as a single island and named it after the silver petrel ( Fulmarus glacialoides ) that breeds here . Soviet scientists cleared up this mistake in 1956 and retained the name for the island described here.
