The Funicular de Santa Cova ( German  Funicular Santa Cova ) is a funicular on Montserrat near Barcelona in Catalonia , Spain .

history

The line was built in 1929 by Ludwig von Roll'sch and belonged to Ferrocarrils de Muntanya de Grans Pendents (FMGP), a company that also built the Funicular de Sant Joan .

Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) took over the funicular in 1986. The route and facilities were renovated in 1963 and 1991. The lower station and one of the trains were badly damaged by floods in July 2000.

Then the facilities were completely renovated. Operations were resumed in June 2001 with new panorama trains.

The route connects the Montserrat monastery and the mountain station of the Cremallera de Montserrat in a continuous curve with the lower station. From there a mountain path leads to the Rosari Monumental de Montserrat (the monumental rosary) to the chapel of Santa Cova, the holy cave , the legendary place where the miraculous image of Montserrat was found .

It is a Catalan railway company that operates a network of electrified suburban lines in Barcelona and Catalonia . The network consists of 140 km of narrow-gauge lines , 42 km of standard-gauge lines , 89 km of broad-gauge lines and two cog railways .

FGC operates the Cremallera de Montserrat rack railway and the Funicular de Sant Joan funicular on Montserrat .
